WHAT IS CELLULITE?
Cellulite is a condition in which the skin has a dimpled, lumpy and orange peel like appearance. It usually affects the buttocks and thigh areas because these areas naturally has more fatty tissue, but it can also occur in other areas like the stomach and arms.
In today’s modern society, we have have become more lazy and sedentary, with everything easily accessible and at the push of a button. Jobs are less active, sitting at desks, doing most tasks via social media, emails, phones or Whats App. We drive to the store and park in the spot closest to the building, and if we cannot get a parking spot right in front of the entrance, we circle the area a few times, until we do get that sweet spot right in front of the door!
Due to decreased circulation. the body gets less oxygen and nutrition to the affected areas, which leads to a decrease in collagen production. Fat cells now becomes larger, and it begins to protrude through the collagen (*collagen is a connective tissue), and becomes that bumpy fat known as cellulite. This means that cellulite is a shallow fat that is situated directly under the skin. The orange-peel appearance of cellulite, is a localized accumulation of fat that triggers inflammation, causing water retention in swollen fat cells and compressing circulatory and lymphatic vessels.
In the image above, one can see that the connective-tissue structures are distorted under pressure from the engorged cells. As they expand, they push against the dermis, causing the characteristic orange peel skin appearance, called cellulite.
WHAT CAUSES CELLULITE?
Today we’re seeing that women starts to develop cellulite at a younger and younger age. We see girls in their teenage years, and even younger, with cellulite. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not related to obesity since it occurs in overweight, normal and thin women, in fact, research showed that 9 out of 10 women have cellulite!
Women, who are over weight, might have a condition called estrogen dominance, which means they are making too much estrogen and/or are eating foods that have estrogen-mimicking ingredients. Women tends to get cellulite around knees, saddlebags and buttocks, because they have 3 layers of fat in these areas (instead of just one) and 3 levels of fat in the stomach and in the triceps areas, while men mostly avoid the phenomenon, thanks to the structure of their subcutaneous tissue, but do develop love handles and bulges above the abdominal muscles.
Other contributing factors to the development of cellulite includes age, family history, tissue inflammation, loss of collagen, poor circulation (a common issue in the legs), poor lymphatic drainage and toxin build up.
SUPER FOODS THAT FIGHT CELLULITE
Your diet also plays a key role in cellulite production AND REDUCTION. Here is a list of some of the super foods that will help you fight cellulite.
Dark berries: Dark varieties of fruit like blueberries and blackberries enhance collagen production, encouraging new skin tissue growth, and this improves skin’s texture and tone. The berries also boast antioxidants, which can reduce the inflammation that makes cellulite more apparent. Eating these foods also may help prevent signs of aging like dryness and wrinkles.
Grapefruit: Packed with anti-inflammatory nutrients and hydration, grapefruits helps to fight cellulite and improve your skin’s integrity.
Avocado: Avocados are high in good fats and fiber. Fiber helps the body balance glucose levels and flush out cellulite-forming toxins.
Salmon: Eating salmon, and other fatty fish such as mackerel, tuna, and trout, will improve the overall condition and appearance of your skin. That’s all thanks to the array of nutrients in fish and the high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids (healthy fats) that helps reduce inflammation.
Leafy greens: Powerhouse veggies like kale and spinach boast nutritious magnesium and fiber. These two are packed with lutein and zeaxanthin, which help protect and hydrate skin cells.
Watermelon: Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that gives watermelon its color. Lycopene improves blood circulation and that can help smooth out cellulite over time, and the high water content helps to hydrate skin.
5 WAYS TO HELP IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF CELLULITE
One promising remedy is massage. This can be done at home or with the help of a professional massage therapist. Massages have a multitude of mind-body benefits, but you may also enjoy reduced thigh cellulite in the process. Massage will help to reduce cellulite by improving lymphatic drainage. It can also help stretch your skin tissue, which will also help stretch out cellulite dimples. BUT, just know that just one massage won’t help when it comes to cellulite. You need to repeat the process consistently to achieve and maintain your desired results.
2. Drink more water:
Water helps promote the body’s natural detox process and flush out toxins. The body is comprised of about 60 percent water, and keeping skin cells hydrated, equates to healthy cells. Drinking water is a low-cost option, and it helps to remove the toxins that can lead to fat accumulation. Water also helps with circulation and lymphatic flow.
3. Possible weight loss:
Weight loss may also help some people who have cellulite, but only if you’re medically considered overweight. Losing excess body fat can naturally reduce the appearance of cellulite. The catch-22 here is that people who are at a healthy weight (or even those who are underweight) are still at risk for developing cellulite. If you do want to lose weight, you may find that a healthy diet and exercise can help reduce dimples on your thighs.
4. Exercise… that can help get rid of cellulite:
Certain exercises may help tighten the skin around the thigh region. In turn, you may also see a reduction in cellulite. Exercise isn’t a fool-proof way to get rid of cellulite on the thighs, but stronger muscles and tighter skin may reduce the appearance of cellulite.
